Our Story

We Built ActiveLayer Because You Asked Us To.

While other spam tools keep raising prices and forcing your visitors to solve CAPTCHAs, we built AI-powered protection that catches spam invisibly in milliseconds.

From the maker of WPForms, AIOSEO, MonsterInsights, and software trusted by 30,000,000+ websites.

Our Story — Why Did We Create ActiveLayer?

If you run a website with forms or comments, you know the pain.

You wake up, check your inbox, and it’s full of spam. Fake submissions. Garbage comments. Bots filling out your contact form with links to sites you’d never visit. And it never stops.

I know this because I’ve lived it for over 17 years.

I’m Syed Balkhi, the guy behind WPBeginner, the largest free WordPress resource site on the web. Aside from WPBeginner, I’ve created popular software brands including OptinMonster, WPForms, AIOSEO, MonsterInsights, and more that collectively power over 30 million websites worldwide.

Spam has been a problem for a very long time. And not just my problem — the problem of millions of people who use the tools I’ve built.

I Tried Everything. Nothing Was Good Enough.

For years, every time someone asked me “how do I stop spam on my WordPress site?”, I’d recommend the usual tools. reCAPTCHA. Honeypots. Akismet. CleanTalk.

And for years, I wrote tutorials about them on WPBeginner. We’d walk readers through the setup, explain the trade-offs, and do our best to help.

But privately? I was never satisfied with what I was recommending.

reCAPTCHA made visitors solve puzzles. Click every traffic light. Select every bicycle. It was annoying, and the data showed it — CAPTCHAs can reduce form completions by up to 40%. That’s not spam protection. That’s lead destruction.

Honeypots caught the dumb bots. But bots got smarter — especially with AI-generated spam flooding the web — and honeypots didn’t stand a chance.

Akismet had been around forever, but it focused mostly on comments. And the pricing kept climbing.

Other spam plugins raised their prices — some doubled overnight. And they were all using the same old playbook: static rules, blacklists, and pattern matching. The spam was evolving faster than any of these tools could keep up.

Meanwhile, I was watching this problem get worse for users across all of my products. WPForms users were getting hit with spam submissions. WPBeginner was drowning in spam comments. Our own internal tools were dealing with the same garbage.

I was recommending tools to millions of readers that I wasn’t even happy with myself. That bothered me.

Then Our Readers Said Something I Couldn’t Ignore.

Here’s the thing about running WPBeginner — I still read the comments. Every day. It’s how I stay connected to what real WordPress users are actually struggling with.

And one day, I noticed something I couldn’t unsee.

In the comments on one of our spam protection tutorials, three different readers — independently — said some version of the same thing:

“You guys build the best WordPress tools out there. Why don’t you just build a spam protection tool too?”

I’d heard this before, scattered across emails and support tickets. But seeing it concentrated in one place, from real people who trusted us enough to ask — that hit different.

Because they were right. I had the team. I had the WordPress expertise. I had 15+ years of building plugins that millions of people depend on. And most importantly, I had the exact same problem they did.

If not me, then who?

And Then AI Changed Everything.

Here’s what made me believe we could actually solve this problem — not just manage it, but solve it.

For decades, spam protection was stuck in a loop. Spammers would adapt, and tools would play catch-up with new rules, new blacklists, new pattern filters. It was an arms race, and the tools were always one step behind.

AI broke that cycle.

With modern AI, we don’t have to write rules for every type of spam. We can train models that understand language — that can tell the difference between a real message and a spammy one by analyzing content patterns, sender reputation, linguistic signals, and behavioral indicators all at once. And unlike static rules, AI gets smarter over time. Every piece of feedback, every new pattern, makes the detection better.

That’s the breakthrough. Not just catching today’s spam, but building a system that evolves with the threat. AI-generated spam is flooding the internet right now, and the only way to fight AI-powered spam is with AI-powered spam protection.

When I realized that, the whole product clicked into place. We didn’t just have the team and the expertise. We finally had the technology to build something that could actually stay ahead.

So I Decided to Build It. The Right Way.

I looked at why every existing spam tool fell short, and I made a list of everything I wanted as a website owner:

No CAPTCHAs. Period. If your visitors have to prove they’re human, you’ve already failed. Spam protection should be invisible — your visitors should never even know it’s there.

Speed that doesn’t compromise conversions. Other spam APIs take 2+ seconds to return a verdict. That delay kills conversions. I wanted millisecond response times. Faster than a database query. Your visitors click submit, and it just works.

Works with the forms people already use. WPForms, Contact Form 7, Ninja Forms, Elementor Forms, Formidable Forms — whatever you’ve chosen, spam protection should plug right in. No rebuilding. No switching. Just enable it.

Transparency. When we flag something as spam, you should know why. Not a mystery score. Not a black box. Real detection signals, a confidence score, and a clear explanation. Every single time.

Fair pricing. Spam protection shouldn’t cost a fortune. I wanted a generous free plan so anyone could try it, and paid plans that make sense — not pricing designed to squeeze you as you grow.

Works beyond WordPress. WordPress is home base, but spam doesn’t stop at WordPress. I wanted a clean REST API that works with any platform — Node.js, PHP, Python, Laravel, anything that can make an HTTP request.

That’s what we built. That’s ActiveLayer.

Here’s What ActiveLayer Actually Does.

You install the plugin (or make an API call). A visitor submits a form or posts a comment. ActiveLayer’s AI analyzes the content in milliseconds — evaluating content patterns, sender reputation, linguistic signals, and behavioral indicators simultaneously.

We return a verdict: spam or not spam. Along with a confidence score and the exact detection signals that triggered the decision. Full transparency, every time.

No CAPTCHAs. No client-side JavaScript. No visitor tracking. No cookies. Completely invisible.

If your visitor is real, they sail right through. If they’re spam, they’re caught before the submission ever reaches your inbox. And every verdict makes the AI smarter for the next one.

It’s that simple. And it works with 9+ WordPress form plugins out of the box — plus any platform via our REST API.

This Is Just the Beginning.

ActiveLayer is live, it’s fast, and its AI is getting smarter with every spam verdict it processes. But we’re just getting started.

The beauty of building on AI is that the product improves continuously — not just when we ship updates, but every single day as it learns from new patterns and new threats. I have a roadmap full of features that will make spam protection even more powerful, more transparent, and more accessible. And the best part? That roadmap is shaped by people like you.

ActiveLayer exists because our readers and users told us they needed it. What we build next will come from you too.

If you have ideas, frustrations, or feedback — I want to hear them. Seriously. That’s how the best products get built.

Let’s make the internet a little less spammy, together.

Founder & CEO, ActiveLayer

Our Mission

To make the internet better by eliminating spam without eliminating real people.

Every CAPTCHA, every puzzle, every “prove you’re human” challenge is a small tax on the people who make the internet worth using — the readers, the customers, the community members who fill out forms, leave comments, and engage with the websites they care about.

We believe spam protection should be invisible. It should catch the bad stuff and let the good stuff through — instantly, accurately, and without asking real people to jump through hoops.

That’s what ActiveLayer does. And we’re just getting started.

Users First

Every feature, every decision, starts with one question: does this make things better for the person using it?

Simplicity

If it takes more than a few minutes to set up, we’ve failed. Complexity is the enemy of getting things done.

Transparency

No hidden fees. No black-box algorithms. No surprises. You should always know what you’re paying for and why something was flagged.

Long-Term Thinking

We’re not a venture-funded startup that might disappear next year. We’re profitable and self-funded. We’ll be here in 10 years. Build on that.

Giving Back

Through the Balkhi Foundation, we support education initiatives — building schools in developing countries and providing higher-education grants. I believe education is the most sustainable solution to inequality.
